Deciding on which cover to keep and pay cash for is proving to be a much more difficult choice than I thought. I guess my thinking was no one would be interested in my contest. Perhaps it was doubt about the quality of work that would be presented. Some of the work did out shine the rest. A lot of it has been high quality in my eye and that has made the choice much more difficult than I thought it would be.
When the images began to take on shading and looked less like paper dolls and more like photos of real people I should have know I was in trouble. When the first one arrived I jumped for joy and the amazing clarity and beautiful picture taken from a scene in the book.
The a second image arrived and a third and fourth one came into my account. It is painful deciding which single cover is to represent the book to the whole world. Yet, that is exactly what I have to do. I thought I had decided on one, until I ran a poll on the last three choices.
My choice did win a few votes but one of the other covers took in a larger than expected number of votes. Now I wonder, do I choose that one against my favorite? Or, how about that cover that sneaked in just as the contest came to a close? Decisions, decisions how will I decide?
Out of 150 plus covers I am down to seven covers and my last day to review. I could use some input. comment below, with your choice. Eversoul is a fictional work on an alternate earth where magic is highly common place. Jack is seeking his past, while his new friends and family attempt to keep secrets about Jack. All of the covers showcase parts from the story of Eversoul so, now it is down to art wort and which catches your eye the most.Which would you pick up from a book shelf?
The submissions are in 120 plus in all. I filter through them and reduced it to 50. More filtering needs to be done today. I need to get down to the final 6 and push forward. It is nice to watch the designs pour in until you realize you can only have one cover. Which one will be? I am pulling from my friends for input but in the end the buck stops here, with me. I have selected five designs that I think are at the top of their game and bring the concept of the book out the best. going to relax and come back to it in a few hour later. Tomorrow I will announce the finalist.
I have received over 70 submissions in three days so far. The competition is tight. Tonight I will narrow things down to the finalist. (I hope.) There are a lot of really nice covers submitted. Wish me luck!
The contest is still going strong. Over twenty designs submitted so far. Some are really very good. I followed the advice found online in a writers group to head off to 99designs and run a contest for my book cover. Extremely professional work that is not cut entirely out of stock images that may have been used over and over again. Here are some of the latest designs as of Saturday 16 February.
Of course if you are headed down the traditional path this step is not necessary. From the start I have felt that self publishing was the path I would follow. I have a few control issues about my creative side. I want to control it to the end because after all its my baby from the start. Why would I want to leave the creative floundering and crying over what someone else did to my dream?
I can see editing is going to be an issue. It is not that I cannot take creative criticism of my work, I worry that changes could change what I wanted the reader to get from conversation or descriptions. I know that I am wordy, and I use too many adverbs when less is better. Does that mean I don’t make mistakes and do it any way. Nope. It was taught to me that adverbs are good, and they bring the description to life. That is true unless you over do it and leave the reader lost , wondering what was he looking at?
Editing is going to be a must. That does not mean I have to like it. Does anyone else have these experiences or is it just me?
Life for me never gets this far off center. The truth is I need to make a big change to my book. Voices. I need to distinguish clearly the difference between each of my characters voices. Red Beard has a very clear voice that cannot be mistake as anyone else. The Ambassador’s voice is fair but could use a little tighten up.. The Archbishop’s voice is pretty fair too, but it could use a tweak or two. Jack’s voice Casandra’s, and Lunar’s voices need work. Mrs. Callahan is okay but tuning it better will help to bring depth to her character.
Besides that? There is in general some other work too that needs to be done before I get to and editor. While the act of writing is free except for the time spent doing it, the editing and cover work is not free. Money flow has been tighter than it needs to be and we have been reworking our budget to allow for more work on the book. Honestly though, I have to finish it to my best ability before I can send it off to an editor.
The cover that has kept me going is not going to be the cover that will be on the finished book. My reading group says it is a proper cover for a love story or a smut book but not for Eversoul. To that advice I will run a contest at the end of February for my new cover.
When the contest opens I will post everything here and share the designs offered. For tonight I am off to bed. See you all again soon.
